Covid-19 has Changed Our Lives.
Cheongdae Times Division of Culture Affairs senior reporter Yoon-Ji Bae
Covid 19 is one of the common type variants of SARS-CoV-2 virus, which were first identified in December 2019 in Wuhan, China. According to WHO, this virus has reported 127.37 million confirmed cases and 27.91 million deaths cases worldwide by March, 28 ,2021. On March 11, 2020 the World Health Organization assigned this virus as a ‘pandemic‘. The Covid-19 has completely changed our live styles. Now we are trying to find out how Covid-19 virus has changed our lives and how our country has responded to Covid-19.
In February 2020, when the number of confirmed cases sharply increased in China, special immigration procedure began in Wuhan, China. PCR-TEST was conducted on people who has the symptoms of Covid at the immigration office. In addition, a 'self-diagnosis application' must be installed and this application was used to select self- diagnosis information of entrant.
The special immigration process has been expanded to Hong Kong and Macau. It is also expanded to Japan. Special immigration procedures have been expanded across Europe on March 16, and finally expanded whole country from March 19. since 1 April 2020, all travelers were required to be self-isolated for 2 weeks.
Those who use state -designated facilities to self-isolate must pay all costs. the cost is 16.8 million won. Other people using their home could not use public transportation returning to their home. they must use special transportation (KTX, BUS) which is only use by foreign travelers. Those arriving to our country from another country are required to submit negative PCR confirmation from January 8 this year for airport arrivals and January 15 for seaport arrivals.
And on February 24, all travelers arriving to the our country from another country are required to submit negative PCR confirmation too.. The test result needs to be issued within 72 hours of the date of departure. And this document must be written in Korean or English. And the name, date of birth, date of the test, result (negative), the method is must be recorded that document.
If people don't have negative PCR confirmation, you can't board the flight. If people have a confirmation that is subs-tandard, the native people will have to self-isolate in the state designated facilities for 2 weeks after PCR test (cost is self-pay) and foreigners can’t enter the country.
Our country increased sharply Covid-19 confirmed cases three times. The first wave began with "Shincheonji Church, where “super spreader" who was confirmed person no.31 in Daegu attended worship. The confirmed cases increased sharply, with 909 confirmed case per day. During this period, Covid-19 spread of Daegu and North Gyeongsan Province. Approximately 107,74 people have been infected, and Korean people were banned from entering many countries.
The second wave was centered on Church and political rally. In both places, people didn't follow Corona virus 19 guidelines and it made a second wave. During this time, 13,282 people were infected and the infection continued in the center of Seoul. The third wave began last November.
Unlike the first and second waves, mass infections continued in the Seoul capital area without specific groups or regions. Large scale infections occurred at multi-use facilities such as senior care centers, hospitals, restaurants, and saunas. Last December, more than 1000 people are confirmed per day.
As a result, strong Covid guidelines, including adding the guideline banning the gathering of more than four people. The third wave still continues. The number of confirmed cases had decreased, but it's slowly increasing and now the daily confirmed cases reach 500.
In Korea, the government led disease control system about Covid-19 because confirmed cases were small. However, since the first wave began, it was difficult to cover the infection with a disease control system. Since then, the disease control system has been reorganized from government to 'social distancing' which focuses on personal quarantine.
The government started the first 'enhanced social distancing' on March 2020. these guidelines regulate the operation of multi-use facilities when confirmed cases was increase, and when they operated their facilities they must observe prevention guidelines and It also included a "administrative order to ban gatherings" if they didn't comply with the guidelines. and if a confirmed person occurs because people didn't follow the guidelines, government has the right to indemnify the Covid-19 treatment cost.
Since mid-April 2020, some "social distancing' measures have been eased, and from May 2020, it has been changed to 'distancing in the daily life' At this time, the guidelines were based on the first stage of the "Distancing in the daily life" such as 2m distancing, keep wearing masks. On June 28 2020, the 'social distancing' was divided into three stages. After 8.15 political rally in Gwanghwamun, 'enhanced social distancing' has been implemented in Seoul.
Last November, 'social distancing' was added 1.5 and 2.5 levels, and revised detailed quarantine guidelines for 'priority management facilities'. In addition, the capital area to ban gatherings of 5 or more people in last December 23, and applied nationwide from last January 4. Now the third wave continues, so that social distancing level remains at level 2 at the capital area, Busan, and other regions at 1.5 level. In addition, there was no limit to the number of family gatherings, but new regulation limit eight person was established.
Our country purchased four vaccines such as Pfizer, Moderna, and AstraZeneca, Johnson &Johnson. In the case of Nova vax, SK bio-science signed a " technology transfer agreement' for the vaccine, achieve the right to sell the vaccine in Korea however, the supply schedule has not been decided. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine which is a one-time inoculation vaccine was 'expert advice' and was declared 'recommend of inoculation vaccine. In the case of Moderna, the supply of vaccines schedule was confirmed in the second quarter.
Since February, vaccinations Pfizer and AstraZeneca began for medical personnel. Detailed targets are workers at senior care center or nursing home, hospital, Corona Therapy hospital and Corona primary Response Agents such as epidemiological investigators, paramedics doctors and nurses. By March 28 primary vaccinations were 790,000 and secondary vaccination were 5000. The vaccination rate for medical personal is 84.3%. some of the Pfizer vaccine for elderly have arrived, and vaccination began for people over 75 years.
The side effects of the Covid-19 vaccine were reported. The AstraZeneca Vaccine is an issue of thrombosis occur when inoculated with the vaccine. But the Ministry of Food and Drug Administration in many countries commonly reported that result of epidemiological investigations have not confirmed a clear link between vaccine and thrombosis.
All vaccines reported side effects such as mild chills, fatigue, muscle pain, slight fever, and several pain in the vaccine inoculation area. According to the survey, young people appealed of side effects more than others. For those suffering from side effects, the government introduced a vaccine vacation. A person who has a side effect can use this vacation for two day without a doctor's certificate, and if side effect persists more than two days, they must visit a designated medical center.
Covid-19 confirmed 100,000 people and 1,722 people died in our country.
Our country maintained fewer confirmed cases than other countries. Because there were efforts by citizens to keep the quarantine guideline well. Now our country began vaccinations and expected to have 70% people complete the vaccination by November, and create population immunity. In order to safely create population immunity, people must follow the quarantine guidelines during vaccinations. Even if we can’t go back to pre-Corona life, I hope that a similar life can come back.
