12 students from the Department of English Language and Literature at Cheongju University are working in collaboration with the Cheongju Baekje Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall to promote the global recognition of important cultural heritage. This project is part of the C-PBL (Collaborative Problem-Based Learning) activity, where under the guidance of Professor Kang Yoo-jin, the students are tasked with translating descriptions of the exhibits at the Cheongju Baekje Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall into English. They are also working to identify and correct errors that may arise in the existing translations. This project goes beyond mere translation; it is an effort to properly understand and convey Baekje culture and its artifacts.
This project includes a significant task that goes beyond translation—creating an English version of the exhibition hall's leaflets. The students are organizing all the necessary information in English to accurately convey detailed information about Baekje artifacts to foreign visitors to the exhibition hall. Through this, the students are learning how to more effectively communicate cultural heritage to international visitors, and the exhibition hall is preparing to welcome a more global audience.
The Cheongju Baekje Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall is planning various exhibitions to preserve the region's historical heritage and widely promote it. The exhibition hall plays a key role in helping foreigners understand Korean history and culture, especially through artifacts from the Baekje period. This translation task is one of the necessary steps to effectively convey the cultural heritage of the Baekje Kingdom to international visitors.
As the number of foreign visitors to the exhibition hall increases, the descriptions of Baekje artifacts must be translated into accurate and easily understandable English. Foreign visitors often desire more in-depth information about the Baekje artifacts, and English translations are an essential means to meet their needs. As a result, the students from the Department of English Language and Literature at Cheongju University are taking great responsibility for the translations they are assigned.
To ensure the accuracy of the translations, the students exchange opinions with each other, and under the guidance of their professor, they repeatedly revise and review their work to produce the best possible translation. This process is not just about improving translation skills but also about using more nuanced expressions based on a deep understanding of Baekje artifacts.
Jiwoo Lee, a student from the Department of English Language and Literature who is participating in this project, said, "Through this C-PBL activity, I am gaining experience solving real-world problems," and "Understanding the historical value of Baekje artifacts and accurately conveying their significance in English is a major task." She added, "I am carefully translating to overcome cultural differences that arise during the translation process so that foreigners can fully understand Baekje artifact.“
She also said, "Through this activity, I feel a great sense of fulfillment in doing important work that goes beyond just translating language—helping to properly understand and communicate the value of Baekje's cultural heritages.“
The Cheongju Baekje Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall stated that this collaboration provides an opportunity to more effectively convey the descriptions of artifacts to international visitors. A representative from the exhibition hall said, "As the number of foreign visitors to the Cheongju Baekje Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall is gradually increasing, accurate English translations are essential," and added, "With the students' participation, the exhibition hall will be able to offer a more international and diverse experiences.“
Moreover, they stated, "Collaboration with Cheongju University will be a significant opportunity to promote the region's cultural heritage to the world." The exhibition hall expects that through this collaboration, information about Baekje artifacts will spread more widely and that foreigners will gain a better understanding of the depth of Baekje culture.
This English translation project is not just an academic activity; it is an important step in globalizing the region's cultural heritage through the collaboration between Cheongju University and the Cheongju Baekje Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall. The English translations created by the students will help more international visitors understand and appreciate Baekje culture and its significance.
The collaboration between Cheongju University and the Cheongju Baekje Cultural Heritage Exhibition Hall plays a crucial role in preserving the cultural heritage of the region and promoting it globally, as the local community and academic institutions work together. Through this project, the students are not only improving their translation skills but also learning the importance of respecting and communicating the value of cultural heritage, giving them a valuable opportunity to develop their cultural communication skills in a global society.
This activity is expected to continue with sustained cooperation and success, and it is anticipated to attract more international attention in the future. |
