International exchange program to study language at Sheffield University in England

Our university has a variety of international exchange programs. There are short-term language training during vacation, exchange students for one semester, field education, internships. You can apply at the beginning of each semester, and selected students will participate in the program.

Recruitment of 2024 summer vacation and the 2024 second semester international exchange program was held from March 18 to March 31. The international program opened this year is as follows.

During the last winter vacation, I went to Sheffield University in the UK for a four-week course of language study. Language study was a special experience that encourage me to challenge myself for something new. I covered the vivid review of language study at Sheffield University in the UK. I hope it will be helpful to students who are curious about the international exchange program.

The Sheffield university is located in Sheffield, the fourth largest city in the U.K. It takes about an hour by bus from Manchester Airport in the U.K. Students who come to study the language are taking classes at the English Language Teaching Center (ELTC). The dormitory is just a minute's walk from the ELTC building.

The training is planned for four weeks, and students learn about different topics in English every week. In this language course, we learned about British national parks, British history, British food, and British literature. Also, there is a field trip once a month. We went to soccer museum in Manchester in this field trip.

Students take classes at the ELTC from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on weekdays. After class, studendts have free time. On weekends, many students travel to nearby cities. There are beautiful small cities around Sheffield, such as York. Bake Well, Leeds. and London, the capital city of England.

An interview was conducted with Kang In-hyup, student of Aeronautical & Mechanical Engineering in the senior, who attended the language study at Sheffield University in the UK last winter semester. Let’s see how Kang In-hyup's language training life was.

Q. What mad you apply for language training?

"I applied for language training to study English, travel and have new experiences“

Q. What is the best thing during study language?

"The school facilities like the library, the student center, and the dormitory were very good. Also, I was very satisfied with the well-organized class curriculum of the ELTC. After class, I reviewed what I learn today at the library and borrowed an English book to read. And I liked living in England. I could learn English culture and lifestyle. Forexample, I skated near the dormitory and it was nice to experience British youth culture in person.“

Q. How much do you improve your English?

"Honestly, I haven't improved my English dramatically. However, as I was learning English every day, my listening and speaking skills have improved a lot. I used English every day and made sure people understood what I was saying, so I feel confidence to speak English.“

Q. Do you have any interesting episode?

"I made new British friends. At the restaurant, they came to me and we talked a lot. We met few more times, and even before I went back to Korea, we met and said goodbye. We still keep in touch, now.“

Q. What has changed since you went to language school?

"I thought I should study English harder. And I have set a new goal to go abroad one more time by any opportunity. In Korea, I care about what people think but too much. However, during study abroad, I met many new people and experience various thing. I think my personality seems to have changed actively.“

Q, Do you recommend language training to other classmates?

"I highly recommend language training to other classmates. Any student who has taken English courses in public education in Korea can fully learn English during language training. It provide a new experience and is a valuable opportunity to learn about the cultures and many things."

Kang In-hyup student said that the experience of study abroad in England is a happy memory that he will never forget. Special memories in a new place seem to be the good motive in one’s life. I hope many classmates participate in various international exchange programs and make their own special experiences.
