Gompyo Wheat Beer Overtakes Famous Beer Brands and Ranks First in Total Sales

Craft beers sold at convenience stores are going beyond the popularity of traditional beer brands.

 

According to the convenience store industry, the Gompyo wheat beer produced by CU in collaboration with "Daehan Milling Company" was commissioned by the manufacturer of Gompyo wheat beer to Lotte Chilsung Beverage. It is gone beyond famous beer brands and ranked first in sales.

 

CU decided to supply 3 million Gompyo wheat beer this month only through Lotte Chilsung Beverage as consignment production allowed. This is a 15-fold increase from the previous supply of 200,000 units per month.

 

From the 29th of last month to the 4th of this month, the daily sales of Gompyo wheat beer were up to 150,000 pieces, an increase of 22.5 times from the average of last year. It is close to the average monthly sales of 200,000 units last year.

 

Since its first release in May of last year, Gompyo wheat beer has been out of stock until recently due to a shortage of supply, but CU explained that its sales jumped explosively when demand was met through mass production.

 

On April 29, last month, the limited sale of 200 boxes of Gompyo wheat beer held at PocketCU, a CU membership application, was sold out within 3 minutes of the start.

 

A CU officials said, "For the past 30 years, it is the first time that a differentiated product sold alone in the convenience store beer market has beaten the product of a large manufacturer and climbed to the top in sales."

 

Thanks to the popularity of Gompyo's wheat beer, CU's craft beer sales jumped 365.5% from the same period last year from April 29th to the 4th of this month. During the same period, the share of craft beer in domestic beer sales increased from about 10% last year to 28.1%.

 

It wasn't just CU that saw an increase in craft beer sales. E-Mart 24 also saw a 526% increase in craft beer sales from January to April compared to the same period last year.

 

E-Mart 24 held a discount event selling 8 kinds of domestic craft beer for 10,000 won per 4 cans by the end of this month, referring to the above statistics.

 

The convenience store industry is also keeping pace with the launch of a variety of craft beers and reinforcing craft beer events.

 

GS25 launched 'Geumseong Beer' in March to celebrate the surpassing sales of 10 million craft beers, and 7-Eleven introduced unique collaboration beers such as 'Juicy Fresh Beer' following 'Yudonggolbaengi Beer'.
