A Guide to Using Campus Safety Equipment to Save Lives

Various safety facilities are installed on campus that can be used in emergencies or fires. However, many students do not know the locations or how to use these facilities if they are not usually interested in them. Emergencies can happen anytime and anywhere, and knowing the location and how to use safety equipment at that moment can make an important difference in saving not only your life but also others. Therefore, this article organizes the locations and how to use major safety facilities so that students can take more interest and respond calmly in real situations.
First, an AED is an automated external defibrillator used when a person has cardiac arrest. AEDs in the school are usually installed near the entrance on the first floor of each building. When using it, first turn on the power and then attach the pads to the patient’s chest by following the voice instructions. The machine automatically checks the heart rhythm, and if it decides a shock is needed, you should press the shock button. AED provides voice guidance so that anyone can use it, so you just need to stay calm and follow the instructions.

To use it, first set the button depending on whether the patient is a child or an adult, press the power button, and then remove the patient’s upper clothing. Then, take out the pads from the lower right side of the device, open the package, remove the cover, and attach them to the patient’s chest. While the device is analyzing the heart activity, you should stay away from the patient and wait, and then press the shock button according to the device’s instructions. After that, you should continue first aid by following the voice instructions until emergency responders arrive. In addition, if you perform CPR together, you can increase the chance of survival. There are often instructions around the AED, so even if you do not remember how to use it, you can stay calm and follow them.
Fire extinguishers are placed in many areas of the building, such as hallways and classrooms. In case of a fire, pull out the safety pin, point the nozzle toward the fire, and press the handle firmly to spray. At this time, it is important to spray at the lower part where the fire started, not the flames.

Fire hydrants are usually installed in hallways or near stairs in buildings. When using it, open the fire hydrant box, hold the nozzle, take out the hose, and point it toward the fire. Then, turn the valve to the left to open it and spray water while holding the nozzle with both hands. However, since the water pressure is strong, it is safer for two or more people to use it together. After putting out the fire, close the fire hydrant valve.

The emergency call button in the women’s restroom can be used in emergencies or crimes. When you press the button, a signal is sent and you can ask for help. It is an important facility that can be used quickly when you feel danger, especially when you are alone. Just having this facility makes people feel much safer when using the restroom. Also, signs like “hidden camera inspection in progress” can help reduce fear of hidden camera crimes.

Evacuation maps are posted throughout the building and show your current location, emergency exits, and escape routes. If you check the evacuation map in advance when you enter the building, you can escape quickly in a real fire or power outage. The evacuation map shows fire safety tips, how to use a fire extinguisher, escape routes, and the locations of exits and extinguishers.

The manual sprinkler control box in the parking lot of the College of Business is a device that can directly operate the sprinkler in case of a fire. If it does not work automatically, you can open the control box and press the start switch firmly to operate the sprinkler. At the top left, you can check the power, operation, and whether the valve is closed, and there is also a call button below. It is impressive that there are safety facilities not only inside the building but also in the parking lot.
As summer approaches, items like portable batteries inside cars can cause fires, so manually operating the sprinkler before emergency responders arrive can be very helpful. There are arrows and instructions on the outside of the device, so even if you do not know how to use it exactly, you can use it fairly easily.

In particular, the old College of Engineering has an emergency equipment box, an escape ladder box, and an emergency hammer. The emergency equipment box contains an oxygen supply device for fire evacuation, a first aid kit, emergency tools, chemical safety equipment, absorbent fences, and absorbent pads. The escape ladder box can be used when it is difficult to escape from a high floor, and an emergency hammer is also placed nearby. An emergency hammer is used to break glass and escape when doors or windows do not open. When using it, it is more effective to hit the corner of the glass rather than the center.

Like this, our school has various safety facilities that help protect students. However, it is not enough for safety facilities to simply exist. They can only do their role when people know their locations and can use them correctly in real emergencies. Usually, there are instructions near safety facilities, but if you pay attention and learn how to use them in advance, you can save valuable lives by keeping the golden time. This will be the most important preparation to protect your life and the lives of others.
생명을 지키는 교내 안전장비 사용 가이드

교내에는 응급상황이나 화재 발생 시 사용할 수 있는 다양한 안전시설이 설치되어 있다. 하지만 대부분의 학생들은 평소 이러한 부분에 큰 관심이 없다면 시설의 위치나 사용 방법을 잘 알지 못하는 경우가 많다. 위급상황은 언제 어디서든 발생할 수 있으며, 그 순간 안전시설의 위치와 사용법을 알고 있는지 여부는 자신뿐만 아니라 다른 사람의 생명까지 지킬 수 있는 중요한 차이가 될 수 있다. 이에 본지는 학생들이 교내 안전시설에 더욱 관심을 가지고 실제 상황에서 침착하게 대처할 수 있도록 주요 안전시설의 위치와 사용 방법을 정리해 보았다.
먼저 AED는 심정지 환자 발생 시 사용하는 자동심장충격기다. 학교 내 AED는 대체로 각 건물 1층 입구 부근에 설치되어 있다. 사용 시에는 먼저 전원을 켠 뒤 음성 안내에 따라 패드를 환자의 가슴에 부착하면 된다. 기계가 자동으로 심장 리듬을 분석하며, 충격이 필요하다고 판단될 경우 충격 버튼을 누르면 된다. AED는 누구나 사용할 수 있도록 안내 음성이 제공되므로 침착하게 안내를 따르면 된다.

사용 방법으로는 먼저 환자가 소아인지 성인인지에 따라 버튼을 설정하고 전원 버튼을 누른 뒤 환자의 상의를 제거한다. 이후 기기 우측 하단의 패드를 꺼내 개봉한 뒤 패드의 커버를 제거하고 환자의 가슴에 부착한다. 심전도를 분석하는 동안에는 환자로부터 떨어져 기다려야 하며, 기기의 지시에 따라 전기충격 버튼을 누르면 된다. 이후 구급대원이 도착할 때까지 안내 음성에 따라 응급처치를 계속해 주면 된다. 이와 더불어 심폐소생술을 병행한다면 생존률을 더욱 높일 수 있다. AED 주변에는 사용 방법이 안내되어 있는 경우가 많아 기억이 나지 않더라도 침착하게 안내를 따라 사용하면 된다.
소화기는 복도나 교실 안 등 건물 곳곳에 비치되어 있다. 화재 발생 시 안전핀을 뽑고, 노즐을 불이 난 곳으로 향하게 한 뒤 손잡이를 강하게 눌러 분사하면 된다. 이때 불꽃이 아닌 불이 시작된 아래쪽 부분을 향해 분사하는 것이 중요하다.

소화전은 주로 건물 복도나 계단 근처에 설치되어 있다. 사용 시 소화전함 문을 열고 노즐을 잡은 뒤 적재된 호스를 꺼내 불이 난 곳 방향을 향하게 한다. 이후 소화전 밸브를 왼쪽으로 돌려 열고 두 손으로 노즐을 잡은 상태에서 물을 분사하면 된다. 다만 소화전은 수압이 강하기 때문에 2인 이상이 함께 사용하는 것이 안전하다. 화재 진화를 마쳤다면 소화전 밸브를 잠근다.

여성화장실 내 비상호출 버튼은 위급상황이나 범죄 등이 발생했을 때 사용할 수 있다. 버튼을 누르면 신호가 전달되어 도움을 요청할 수 있다. 특히 혼자 있는 공간에서 위험을 느낄 경우 빠르게 사용할 수 있는 중요한 시설이다. 이러한 시설이 있다는 것만으로도 훨씬 안심하고 화장실을 사용할 수 있다. 또한 ‘상시 몰래카메라 탐지 순찰 중’과 같은 문구를 통해 몰래카메라 범죄에 대한 불안도 줄일 수 있다.

피난안내도는 건물 내부 곳곳에 부착되어 있으며, 현재 위치와 비상구, 대피로를 안내한다. 건물에 들어갔을 때 미리 피난안내도를 확인해 두면 실제 화재나 정전 상황에서 신속하게 탈출할 수 있다. 피난안내도에는 화재 시 피난 요령과 소화기 사용 요령, 피난 동선, 비상구와 소화기 위치 등이 표시되어 있다.

비즈니스대학 주차장 내 스프링클러 수동조작함은 화재 시 스프링클러를 직접 작동시키는 장치다. 자동으로 작동하지 않는 상황에서는 조작함을 열고 가동 스위치를 강하게 누르면 스프링클러를 작동시킬 수 있다. 좌측 상단에는 전원, 가동, 밸브 닫힘 여부를 확인할 수 있도록 되어 있으며, 그 아래에는 전화 버튼도 있다. 건물 내부뿐만 아니라 주차장에도 안전시설이 있다는 점이 인상적이다.
여름이 다가오는 만큼 차량 내부에 보조배터리 등이 있을 경우 화재가 발생할 수 있는데, 구급대원이 오기 전까지 스프링클러를 수동 조작해 작동시켜 둔다면 큰 도움이 될 수 있다. 장치 외관에 화살표와 사용 방법이 표시되어 있어 사용법을 정확히 알지 못하더라도 비교적 쉽게 사용할 수 있다.

특히 공과대학 구관에는 비상기구함, 피난사다리함, 비상용 망치가 설치되어 있다. 비상기구함 안에는 화재 대피용 산소공급기, 구급함, 비상관리 용구, 화학 안전장구, 흡착 펜스, 흡착포 등이 포함되어 있다. 피난사다리함은 고층에서 탈출이 어려운 상황에 사용할 수 있으며, 주변에는 비상용 망치도 함께 비치되어 있다. 비상용 망치는 문이나 창문이 열리지 않을 때 유리를 깨고 탈출하기 위해 사용한다. 사용할 때는 유리 중앙보다는 모서리 부분을 강하게 타격하는 것이 더 효과적이다.

이처럼 우리 학교에는 다양한 안전시설이 마련되어 있어 학생들의 안전을 지키고 있다. 하지만 안전시설은 단순히 존재하는 것만으로 충분하지 않다. 실제 위급상황이 발생했을 때 위치를 알고, 올바르게 사용할 수 있어야만 그 역할을 다할 수 있다. 일반적으로 안전시설 주변에는 사용 방법이 안내되어 있지만, 평소 주변 안전시설에 관심을 가지고 사용 방법을 숙지한다면 골든타임을 지켜 소중한 생명을 살릴 수 있다. 이것이 자신과 다른 사람의 생명을 지키는 가장 중요한 준비가 될 것이다.
