Our university museum plays a vital role as an educational and research institution, promoting the region’s cultural heritage and scholarly value to a wider audience. Through a wide range of exhibitions and research initiatives, the museum provides students and local community members with meaningful opportunities to understand history and culture, establishing itself as one of the university’s representative cultural institutions

Our university museum is widely recognized for its excavation of the Heungdeoksa Temple Site, which provided the decisive evidence for registering Jikji Simche Yojeol, the world’s oldest metal movable-type print as a UNESCO Memory of the World. In addition, the museum has made significant contributions to promoting the region’s history and cultural achievements at home and abroad through ongoing excavations and research at major heritage sites, including the Mireuk-ri Temple Site in Chungju and the Uncheon-dong Temple Site in Cheongju.

 

 

The museum permanently exhibits around 2,000 artifacts from the Neolithic period to the late Joseon dynasty organized by era and type, based on the systematic collection of items with significant academic and historical value. The exhibition spaces on the first and second floors are designed to guide visitors chronologically through the artifacts, enhancing their educational experience. Additionally, the museum hosts one to two special exhibitions each year, introducing a variety of historical and cultural themes and offering visitors fresh cultural experiences. These special exhibitions not only serve as educational resources for students but also provide local residents with the opportunity to enjoy high quality displays, receiving enthusiastic responses from the community. The museum is open to visitors on weekdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. from March to December. However, it remains closed on weekends, public holidays, and during school breaks, so visitors should plan their visits accordingly.

 

 

Yang Seo-in, a student from the Department of Trade who visited our university museum, said, “I expected there would be cumbersome procedures like checking student IDs before entering, but in reality, I just had to sign the visitor log to get in, so I could visit without any pressure. And if you are a student at our university, I recommend that you visit the museum at least once. I think the very fact that our campus has a museum is a source of pride for students. The exhibitions are more extensive than I expected, offering a variety of displays and above all, visiting the museum is one of the ways students can fully enjoy campus life.” The museum’s simple entry procedure makes visiting convenient helping students feel more comfortable and familiar with the space.

This year, our university museum has been actively promoting cultural value among both the campus. In the community and the local society through a variety of collaborative initiatives. In particular, by participating in the 2025 Chungcheongbuk-do Museum and Art Museum Joint Exhibition, titled “Connecting People,” the museum strengthened its collaborative network with local cultural institutions. Additionally, in the second half of this year, the museum partnered with the Central Library to conduct orientation and introductory programs for both domestic and international students. The program aimed to help campus students become more familiar with both facilities by utilizing the exhibition materials and spaces of the museum and the library. Through this initiative, students were able to naturally engage with the museum’s exhibitions and artifacts as well as learn how to utilize the library’s academic resources while also enhancing international students understanding of campus facilities.

The university museum announced that it will continue to strengthen ties with local cultural institutions and carry out exhibitions, academic activities that encourage interaction between students and the local community. The museum’s participation in the joint exhibition and its collaboration with the Central Library demonstrate that it plays a vital role beyond being just an exhibition space, serving as a bridge within the campus knowledge ecosystem. Going forward, the museum is expected to expand its educational and research functions and develop into a cultural space where both students and local residents can actively participate through various collaborations and programs.

Kim Kyung-hwan, a curator at our university museum, stated, “The museum currently serves university students, international students, and residents of Cheongju. We focus on operating the museum in a way that allows anyone to enjoy cultural experiences through the exhibition halls. Although the museum is currently exhibition-focused, we plan to strengthen its educational role and offer a variety of learning programs in the future.”

 

 

He also emphasized the historical significance of our university museum, saying, “As the first comprehensive museum in the Chungbuk region, it opened in 1967 and has maintained a long history. It houses a wide range of artifacts and rare treasures from different eras, making it exceptionally significant in both scale and value for a university museum.” He also mentioned that the museum is currently collaborating with the National Folk Museum to develop educational programs, with plans to launch them next year.

 

 

He also highlighted the cultural environment of our university campus, saying, “The university is not just an educational institution it is also a place where people can enjoy culture through various spaces such as the library, museum, parks, and forests.” He added, “I hope students recognize the campus not merely as a place for learning but as a rich cultural space, and that they become more aware of and make use of the museum in particular.”

우리대학 박물관 전시, 교육 기능 확장하며 캠퍼스 문화 중심지로 도약

우리대학 박물관이 우리 지역의 문화유산과 학술적 가치를 널리 알리는 교육 및 연구 기관으로서 중요한 역할을 수행하고 있다. 박물관은 다양한 전시와 연구 활동을 통해 학생들과 지역사회 구성원들에게 역사와 문화를 이해할 수 있는 기회를 제공하며, 우리대학의 대표적인 문화 시설로 자리매김하고 있다.

우리대학 박물관은 세계 최고 금속활자인 ‘직지심체요절’의 유네스코 세계기록유산 등재에 결정적 근거가 된 ‘흥덕사지’ 발굴 조사로 널리 알려져 있다. 이뿐 아니라 충주시 ‘미륵리사지’, 청주시 ‘운천동사지’ 등 주요 유적에 대한 꾸준한 조사와 연구를 통해 지역의 역사와 문화적 성취를 대내외에 알리는 데 큰 기여를 해왔다.

 

 

박물관은 학술적·역사적으로 가치가 높은 유물의 체계적인 수집을 바탕으로 신석기시대부터 조선 말기까지 약 2,000여 점의 유물을 시대별, 유물별로 상설 전시하고 있다. 지상 1층과 2층의 전시 공간은 관람객들이 자연스럽게 시대의 흐름을 따라가며 유물을 이해할 수 있도록 구성돼 있어 교육적 효과를 높였다. 또한 박물관은 매년 1~2차례 특별전을 통해 다양한 역사·문화 주제를 소개하며 관람객들에게 새로운 문화 경험을 제공하고 있다. 특별전은 학생들의 학습 자료로도 활용될 뿐만 아니라 지역 주민들에게 수준 높은 전시를 관람할 기회를 제공하며 큰 호응을 얻고 있다. 박물관은 3월부터 12월까지 평일 오전 9시 30분부터 오후 5시까지 관람이 가능하다. 다만 주말과 공휴일, 방학 기간에는 휴관하므로 방문객들은 참고해야 한다.

 

 

우리대학 박물관에 방문한 무역학과 양서인 학생은 “들어가기 전에 학생증 확인과 같은 번거로운 절차가 있을 거라고 생각했지만, 실제로는 방명록만 작성하면 입장할 수 있어 부담 없이 방문할 수 있었습니다. 그리고 우리대학교 학생이라면 한 번쯤 박물관을 방문해 보는 것을 추천합니다. 학교 캠퍼스 내에 박물관이 있다는 사실 자체가 재학생으로서 자긍심을 느낄 수 있는 기회이라고 생각하고, 전시 규모가 생각보다 작지 않아 볼거리가 다양하며 무엇보다 박물관을 방문하는 것은 재학생이 캠퍼스를 보다 풍부하게 누릴 수 있는 방법 중 하나라고 생각합니다” 라고 답하였다. 간단한 절차 덕분에 박물관을 찾는 과정이 편리했고 이는 학생들에게 박물관을 친근하게 느낄 수 있는 요인으로 작용했다.

우리대학 박물관은 올해 다양한 협력 활동을 통해 학교 구성원과 지역 사회에 문화적 가치를 확산하는 데 힘쓰고 있다. 특히 2025년 충청북도 박물관·미술관 연합전시 ‘사람, 잇다’에 참여하며 지역 문화기관 간 협력 체계를 강화했다. 더불어 박물관은 올해 하반기 중앙도서관과 협약 하여 학생 및 유학생을 대상으로 한 안내, 소개 프로그램을 진행했다. 이번 프로그램은 박물관과 도서관이 보유한 전시 자료와 공간을 활용해 학내 구성원들이 두 시설을 더욱 친숙하게 이용할 수 있도록 돕는 데 목적을 두었다. 이를 통해 학생들은 박물관의 전시와 유물 활용 방식, 도서관의 학술 자료 이용법 등을 자연스럽게 접할 수 있었으며 유학생들의 학교 시설 이해도 향상에도 기여했다.

우리대학 박물관은 앞으로도 지역 문화기관과의 연계를 강화하고 학생과 지역민이 함께 소통할 수 있는 전시 및 학술 활동을 지속한다고 밝혔다. 이번 연합전시 참여와 중앙도서관과의 프로그램 운영은 박물관이 단순한 전시 공간을 넘어 교내 지식 생태계를 잇는 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 보여준다. 앞으로도 박물관은 교육, 연구 기능을 확장하고 다양한 협력과 프로그램을 통해 학생과 지역민 모두가 함께 참여하는 문화 공간으로 발전할 것으로 기대된다.

우리대학 박물관 김경환 학예사는 “박물관은 현재 대학교 재학생과 외국인 유학생, 그리고 청주 시민을 주요 대상으로 운영되고 있습니다. 개관한 전시실을 통해 누구나 문화적 향유를 느낄 수 있도록 하는 데 중점을 두고 운영하고 있습니다. 지금은 전시 중심으로 운영되고 있지만, 앞으로는 교육적 기능을 강화해 다양한 학습 프로그램을 제공할 계획입니다” 라고 답하였다.

 

또한 우리대학 박물관의 역사적 의미에 대해서도 강조하며 “충북 지역 최초의 종합박물관으로 1967년 개관해 오랜 역사를 이어왔고, 시대별 유물과 진귀한 보물들을 폭넓게 소장하고 있어 대학 박물관으로서는 규모와 가치가 매우 높다”고 말했다. 더불어 현재 국립민속박물관과 협업해 교육 프로그램을 개발 중이며 내년 시행을 목표로 준비하고 있다고 전했다.

 

 

그는 우리대학 캠퍼스 자체가 지닌 문화적 환경에 대해서도 언급하며 “대학은 교육 기관에 그치지 않고 도서관, 박물관, 공원, 산림 등 다양한 공간을 통해 문화를 즐길 수 있는 곳이기도 하다”며 “학생들이 학교를 단순한 학습의 장소가 아닌 풍부한 문화공간으로 인식하고, 특히 박물관이 존재한다는 사실을 더 많이 알고 활용해주길 바란다”고 덧붙였다.
