 On Tuesday, November 19, the book concert of the writer Seo Mi-sook, the first graduating student of our university’s Department of Library, was held at the Cinema Hall on the second floor of the Central Library. As the author of 『Journey to the Last Stop』, she delivered a lecture on the theme “Life Stories, learned on the Road,” sharing the meaning of life that she discovered through travel and reading.

 Writer Seo’s background is as follows: after graduating from our university’s Department of Library, she joined the Central Library as a member of its first staff. Later, she worked as a librarian at Andong National University. In 1986, she attended the IFLA General Conference in Tokyo, and in 2015 she began her writing career with the publication of 『Reading Ten Thousand Books』 and another essay in the quarterly literary magazine 《Mun-jang》. From 2023 to June 2025, she published essays and photo-essays in Daily Korea and was selected as the Local Writer of the Month in Andong, continuing her active literary work. In addition, she has shared insights into various programs, such as mini book concerts and lectures at the Korea        Travel Writers’ School, that she gained from travel and reading. She currently serves as a research fellow at the Andong Cultural Center’s Local Culture Research Institute, a member of the Korean Writers’ Association’s Traditional Literary Arts Committee, and a board member of the Keum-a Pi Cheon-deuk Literature Memorial Foundation, contributing to the development of local culture and literature.

 

 Her major essay collections include 『Be a Flower in Someone’s Eyes』 and 『Journey to the Last Stop of Andong City Bus Routes』. 『Be a Flower in Someone’s Eyes』 was also published as an e-book and received wide readership. She was awarded the 20th Won Jong-rin Essay Literature Prize in 2024. Journey to the 『Last Stop of Andong City Bus Routes』, which chronicles her four-year journey through the 24 bus routes of Andong, will receive the 3rd Leaders Essay Travel Writer Award on December 18.

 Lee Ae-ran, Director of the our university Central Library, stated, “We have organized this ‘Book Concert with Stories’ to foster a reading culture among students and to fulfill the library’s role of serving the local community. We hope this event will enhance the humanities literacy of students and citizens alike and encourage lifelong learning and a greater desire to read.”

 

It was a particularly meaningful book concert, as students were able to take the lecture from a student who graduated from our university. Life goes in unexpected ways. However, the experience we had been through ultimately made us stronger. Sometimes, our life journey can be difficult, but as 『Journey to the Last Stop』, each step will prove to be meaningful. When you reach your own “last stop”, I hope you will come to appreciate the true value of the path you have taken.

우리대학 졸업생 서미숙 작가의 북콘서트

11월 19일 화요일, 중앙도서관 2층 시네마홀에서 우리대학 도서관학과 (현 문헌정보학과) 1회 졸업생인 서미숙 작가의 북콘서트가 열렸다. 서 작가는 『종점 기행』의 저자로 ‘길 위에서 읽은 삶의 이야기’를 주제로, 여행과 독서를 통해 발견한 인생의 의미를 강연을 통해 이야기하였다.

서 작가의 약력은 다음과 같다. 우리대학 도서관학과 (현 문헌정보학과)를 졸업하고, 우리 대학 중앙도서관 1기로 입사하였다. 이후 국립안동대학교 사서로 재직하였다. 1986년 도쿄에서 국제도서관협회연맹 총회에 참여하였고, 2015년 계간 《문장》에서 『만 권의 책을 읽다』 외 1편을 시작으로 본격적인 작가 활동을 시작하였다. 2023년부터 2025년 6월까지 《데일리 한국》에서 수필과 디카에세이를 연재하였고, 안동시에서 이달의 지역 작가로 선정되며 활발히 작가활동을 이어갔다. 또한, 미니북콘서트, 한국여행작가학교 강연을 통해 여행과 독서를 통해 얻은 삶의 의미를 독자들과 함께 공유하는 활동도 지속해오고 있다. 현재, 안동문화원 향토문화연구소 연구위원, 한국문인협회 전통문학예술위원, 금아피천득문학기념사업회 이사를 역임하며 향토문화 연구와 문학 발전에 꾸준히 힘써오고 있다.

 

대표 수필집으로는 『남의 눈에 꽃이 되게』, 『안동 시내버스 종점 기행』이 있다. 『남의 눈에 꽃이 되게』는 e-book으로도 출간되며 많은 독자들에게 사랑을 받은 작품이다. 2024년 제20회 원종린수필문학상 작품상을 수상하기도 하였다. 『안동 시내버스 종점 기행』은 작가가 4년동안 24개의 안동 시내 모든 버스 노선을 타고, 안동의 구석구석을 누빈 작가의 여행기를 담은 책으로 다가오는 12월 18일 제3회 리더스 에세이 여행작가상을 수상할 예정이다.

청주대 이애란 중앙도서관장은 “학생들이 책 읽는 문화 형성 및 지역사회에 봉사하는 도서관으로서의 역할을 다하기 위해 ‘이야기가 있는 북 콘서트’를 개최하게 됐다”며 “이 행사를 통해 재학생 및 시민들의 인문학적 소양을 향상시키고, 평생 배움의 가치와 독서 의욕을 높일 수 있기를 기대한다”고 말했다.

 

학생들이 우리 대학 선배님의 이야기를 직접 들을 수 있어 더욱 의미 있는 강연이었던 것 같다. 삶은 예측할 수 없게 흘러간다. 하지만, 우리가 걸어온 시간과 만난 사람들은 결국 우리를 단단하게 만들어 준다. 『종점 기행』의 여정에서처럼 학생들의 걸음도 때로는 고단할지라도, 돌아보면 모두가 의미있는 경험이 될 것이다. 각자의 종점에 도착했을 때, 내가 걸어온 길의 소중함을 깨달을 수 있기를 바란다.
