A Proposal for Creating a Growth Mindset Program

Around four years ago, I attended a meeting held at Cheongju University, where a personnel team leader of Chungcheongbuk Province participated as a panelist. Unfortunately, I don't remember when the meeting was and what was on the agenda.

 

However, I vividly recall one thing that's now engraved in my mind. He asked one question: “Which is most important among personality, intelligence, and grit in the hiring process?” His answer was firmly stated,

 

simply that grit is the most crucial factor when considering hiring new staff because young generations easily leave their current job and consider a new one to get better benefits. So, I’d like to propose for our university to develop a program through which students can develop grit with a growth mindset.

 

An immediate question to ask now is how to achieve this goal? My suggestion is for the university to consider designing extracurricular activities that enable students to foster and strengthen this trait.

 

Relatively speaking, there are a number of personality education programs and other extracurricular programs that can boost students’ interests in their minor and major subjects. Unfortunately, there is no single program to build perseverance for very long-term goals.

 

I may be half-joking when I say this, but it may be reasonable to propose an extracurricular program where students go to the top of Uam Mountain. Students will be assigned a certain amount of mileage. According to personal experience, it will take me less than an hour to complete a round-trip hike from ascent to descent. Furthermore,

 

if the number of mountain climbing trips exceeds a certain number, for example 10 times, 20 times, 30 times, etc., students will receive a certificate issued by the president of Cheongju University proving his or her determination and involvement in the program.

 

Before concluding this brief article, I’d like to highlight that according to Dr. Carol Dwek of Stanford University, the ability to learn is not fixed, instead, can change based on one’s effort and determination.

 

She claims that kids and even adults are more likely to persevere when they fail because they don’t believe that failure is a dead end at all. Therefore, we need a growth mindset program at Cheongju University that ultimately helps students build up their grit.
